President Prabowo Subianto has reiterated the careful considerations made by the Indonesian government before engaging in negotiations with the United States to reduce import tariffs from 32% to 19%. He emphasized that the main focus during the discussions was to protect the interests of the Indonesian people, especially the workers in the country.
“We have analyzed everything. We have conducted negotiations. What matters most to me is the well-being of our people. I must ensure the protection of our workers,” Prabowo stated during a press conference at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta on Wednesday (July 16).
Despite the challenges faced, Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia maintained a strong stance throughout the negotiations.
“We have taken a firm position. This is our offer—we cannot go any further. However, the key point is to ensure the safety of our workers,” he emphasized.
The president also highlighted that Indonesia’s economy is resilient and in a good position to handle global uncertainties, including trade tensions.
“I am very optimistic. Our economy is sturdy. Regardless of any circumstances, we are prepared,” he expressed.
Regarding the tariff negotiations with the U.S., Prabowo described the talks as difficult yet fruitful. Both parties reached a mutual understanding after recognizing each other’s strategic interests.
“We have comprehended their priorities, and they have understood ours. This led us to an agreement,” he explained.
“The tariffs have been reduced from 32% to 19%. I continued negotiating—I had discussions with President Trump, who is known for being a tough negotiator,” he added.
Previously, President Trump announced a trade agreement with Indonesia, confirming the reduction of tariffs on Indonesian goods to 19%.
